client brief

A professional family with older children and dog required a visually interesting space that reflected the design of a recent extension to the house. The concept of the architect who worked on the house is very much "inside out". Specific features required included water, a sunny place to sit, no lawn, a change in the atmosphere of the garden into a more tranquil and contemporary area and retention of mature planting down one side of the garden. New planting was to reflect site conditions and allow the garden to be wildlife friendly.

solution

The garden was cleared, with the exception of some mature boundary planting which was retained for privacy and sentimental reasons. A new polished concrete outside seating area was built in the sunniest area of the garden. This was joined to the house with a green oak sleeper pathway. Adjacent to the new terrace a raised water feature was constructed on two levels to provide a pleasant background sound. An angle iron and steel wire pergola was built to reflect similar construction methods used in the house extension. More recently a vertical green wall has been installed to the rear of the seating area. Complimentary lighting has been installed throughout the garden to improve the visual attraction and usability of the garden at night.
