client brief

To transform a steep sloping garden into several usable and more visually appealing areas including a football pitch and room to park three vehicles. It also needed to satisfy strict planning conditions

site conditions

Steep sloping site rising 1 in 5, large modern house, long narrow single drive no turning on site, 8 boundary wall parties surrounding the plot

solution

With the use of several major retaining walls, a garden was created on four levels starting with a courtyard which incorporated a turntable, parking for three cars and some mature tree planting for planning purposes.

Three flights of steps form a feature to give access to the main garden and to a side garden part of the way up.

A shed was constructed under the main lawned area, with concealed access from the steps so it is unseen from the main garden.

Broad elegant grass steps lead down to the first floor of the house.

An elevated garden area on the main retaining wall was planted as an orchard.

A terraced area for dining was created at the first floor level.

To integrate the house in to the garden, a 2nd floor area was lawned. Also a separate green roof was made for wildlife and a woodland garden was created in the basement lightwell area.

A major project with a huge number of different aspects to consider.
